The Opioid Epidemic: How Did It Happen and Where Is It Headed?

The opioid epidemic is complex - a convergence of smaller failures in substance abuse treatment, healthcare, and public policy. Explore the possible determinants of the epidemic and policy responses to the epidemic. Presented by Walden University.

Summary

What is termed “the opioid epidemic” is complex, and likely comprised of a convergence of smaller failures in substance abuse treatment, healthcare, and public policy, as well as the nature of opioids themselves. Drug overdoses in any of the previous few years exceeded all American Vietnam deaths and also all deaths during the deadliest year of HIV. Opioid overdoses accounted for more than 47,000 deaths in 2017 (67.8% of all drug deaths). This webinar will examine some trends in the incidence rates of opioid overdoses in different regions of the U.S.

We will also explore possible determinants of the epidemic and policy responses to the epidemic. For example, the 2010 expansion of the Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act (MHPAEA) opened up the substance abuse treatment market to fraud and abuse in ways never before seen in that industry. The forms of fraud and abuse uncovered contributed, in some ways, to fueling the opioid crisis in some U.S. regions.

Finally, this webinar will discuss a range of future targets in areas of substance abuse prevention, treatment, and policy, including wider use of Narcan to prevent overdose deaths, the adoption of MAT as standard care for people with opioid use disorders, and increasing acceptance for syringe exchange programs to reduce the infectious disease harms associated with needle-sharing.

Learners will:

  • Assess leading precursors to and possible determinants of the opioid epidemic
  • Evaluate changes in regional prevalence rates of opioid overdoses in the U.S.
